The Metropolitan Cathedral of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, better known as the Cathedral of Brasilia, is the metropolitan cathedral of the city of Brasilia, capital of Brazil.
Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, with structural calculation by engineer Joaquim Cardoso, it was the first monument to be created in Brasília. Its cornerstone was laid on September 12, 1958. Its structure was ready in 1960, where only the circular area of seventy meters in diameter appeared, from which sixteen concrete columns (pillars of parabolic section) rise in a hyperboloid format, which weigh ninety tons. The engineer Joaquim Cardozo was responsible for the structural calculation that allowed the construction of the cathedral.
On May 31, 1970, it was actually inaugurated, already on this date with transparent external glass. In the temple access plaza, there are four bronze sculptures three meters high, representing the evangelists; the sculptures were made with the help of the sculptor Dante Croce, in 1968. Inside the nave, there are sculptures of three angels, suspended by steel cables. The dimensions and weight of the sculptures are 2.22 m long and one hundred kg less; 3.40 m long and two hundred kg the average and 4.25 m long and three hundred kg the largest. The sculptures are by Alfredo Ceschiatti, with the collaboration of Dante Croce in 1970.
The ovoid baptistery had on its walls the panel in ceramic tiles painted in 1977 by Athos Bulcão. The bell tower composed of four large bells, donated by Spain, completes the architectural ensemble. The nave's roof has a stained glass window composed of sixteen fiberglass pieces in shades of blue, green, white and brown inserted between the concrete pillars. Each piece is inserted in triangles with ten meters of base and thirty meters of height that were designed by Marianne Peretti in 1990. The altar was donated by Pope Paul VI and the image of the patron saint Nossa Senhora Aparecida is a replica of the original found in Aparecida - São Paulo.
The Way of the Cross is a work by Di Cavalcanti. At the entrance of the cathedral, there is a pillar with passages from the life of Mary, mother of Jesus, painted by Athos Bulcão.
Currently, the pastor of the cathedral is Father George Albuquerque Tajra. As it is located on the esplanade of the Ministries, the cathedral does not have a fixed community - a large part of the faithful who attend it is composed of tourists and the faithful who work on the terrace. The cathedral is open every day for visits, with the exception of Mass times.
