Its origin derives from the request of the Order of the Jesuits to make way for a College.
Its foundation was carried out, in total, in 1561, according to the corresponding permit. It was in 1580 that it began to move and finally, in 1582, the school was inaugurated. The temple was inaugurated in 1626.
As expected, the earthquakes that healed the Colonial City hit this building, which was rebuilt in 1689.
Of course Diego de Porres remains in an unbeatable building since he has hiccups with many others in the city, the design is the same and it survives today as part of the original building.
The Jesuits were expelled by order issued in 1767, which marks the beginning of the abandonment of the facilities punished by the 1773 earthquake. They were also left unattended by the most recent 1976 earthquake.
The history of the place dates back to 1582, even when the Colegio de la Compañía de Jesús was founded, whose distribution is attributed to Francisco Fernández Fuentes.
It is the home of a small group of religious characterized by their high intellectual level. All of them were dedicated to teacher training and among them was the illustrious Guatemalan writer Rafael Landívar.
The Jesuits were expelled by royal order and the building was completely empty. After the magnificent church structures were destroyed during the Santa Marta earthquake and with it, part of the Colegio de la Compañía de Jesús.
Later it was used as a market until 1976, when another earthquake occurred. Even after settling in an artisan market, but later, in 1992, the International Agency for Spanish Cooperation acquired the commitment to restore the facilities in exchange for taking the School to an International Training Center. The first course taught was History, held in 1995, marking the beginning of the Center's teaching activity.
It can be seen with a part in ruins, more than the entire exterior, and another much restored and in use by the Spanish Cooperation in what was the Colegio de Jesús.
The facade of the temple could contemplate the free of obstacles, with an atrium vacated and accessible, since previously it was used as a handicraft market.
The Compañía Jesús complex is located in the middle of the Plaza del Parque Central and west of the Alameda de Santa Lucía.
It hosts events and cultural activities.
Cultural activity in Antigua Guatemala has been growing and with increasing participation. Nowadays it is frequent that in the original attribution of the church, in front of the College, lectures, plays and declared poetry are held.
