In this place, the most romantic wind blows in Prague, where the myths reach the historical realities. Being the seat of the first sovereigns of Bohemia, Vyšehrad can be considered as the beginning of the Czech nation. Inspired by the spirit of legend, this unique place is currently one of the places to walk for the Czechs.
Legend has it that the mythical Princess Libuše with prophetic gifts had in this place the vision of the glorious future of Prague: "a city whose splendor will reach the stars". It was long believed that this enclosure was the oldest in Prague, a hypothesis that was discarded by archaeological excavations and historical investigations. Some Přemyslides sovereigns installed their residence in this place intermittently. However, it was the Emperor Charles IV who during the fourteenth century, preoccupied with perpetuating the founding myths, which ordered the renovation of the old palace. The Hussite destruction reduced Vyšehrad to a ruined field and later, during the Baroque period, a fortress was built.
The legend was reborn strongly in the nineteenth century, in the middle of the romantic era and of Czech national renewal, with the glorification of the place through painting, music and literature, as well as the construction of the church of St. Peter and St. Paul and the conditioning from park to church inside the enclosure. It is no coincidence that Vyšehrad was chosen to house Slavín, a type of National Pantheon where the best-known Czechs are buried.
Visit the Vyšehrad precinct and its neighborhood.
