There are not many certified documents on the beginnings of this municipality, except for the general chronicles of the entire region where it is settled, Urabá. It is known that it was a typical region of conquerors and indigenous people fighting side by side. When present-day Colombia began to organize, that is known, Chigorodó belonged to the district or municipality of Turbo.
There are records that in 1912 there was an ordinance of the government of the Province of Antioquia, number 10 of that year, when Governor Clodomiro Ramírez ordered a strip of land from the Juradó River to be separated from Turbo to be added to the Pavarandocito River. It was on these dates, separation and ordinance, when the municipality of Chigorodó was officially created.
"Chigorodó" means, in indigenous language, "Río de Guaduas". This town, around 1878, was also called Nombre de Dios. It has also been called "The Cruise." As far as it is known, in the 1880s and until 1910, some tagua exploiters settled in Chigorodó.
In 1915, ordinance 52 of April 27 established the town of Chigorodó as a municipality. In this year, due to the decrease in the exploitation of tagua, its inhabitants emigrated to other areas and rice and cocoa began to be cultivated in the area, and it was also at this time that the exploitation of wood began in the place.
At present, Chigorodó is still that hot municipality but with large fresh rivers in which it is possible to swim or do boat tours. Next to it stands the Serranía de Abibe, a large water reserve in the Urabá subregion. Its economy depends on bananas, one of Colombia's main export products, and livestock, which attract many visitors to its traditional auctions, the busiest in the entire region.
Founders: José de los Santos Zúñiga, María Paredes, Celestino Díaz and Manuel Correa
