Etymologically the name given to this region comes from the indigenous word motilón - barí ´´Tarra´´ which means: enclosed between rivers, place of defense. The Catatumbo region was surrounded by numerous families of Motilon Indians since primitive times, who formed groups of approximately 50 people; These inhabited a community of house or huts.

The primitive settlers of this region were displaced from these lands in 1940 when the first oil wells were discovered. It is due to this fact that the colonization of El Tarra begins, since the settlement of different families from towns

Neighbors and other regions of the country, motivated by the search for better living conditions and with the aspiration to work in the foreign company, makes them acquire land in this region, and build houses on the edge of the Orú, Filogringo, Bellavista road. and El Tarra.

Starting in 1943, the first cabins or ranches were built on the roadable area where the urban center is located today, by Miguel Antonio Díaz, Jesús Zambrano, Rosario Gómez, Otoniel Sanguino, Ramón Téllez and José del Carmen Sánchez.
